Summary:Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) help in increasing the coverage of Internet of Things (IoT) systems in areas with poor accessibility. UAVs offer the benefit of permanent deployment of IoT nodes at remote locations as well as coverage of temporary events by the virtue of their mobility. UAV enabled IoT systems as any other IoT system tend to generate huge amounts of variety of data at very high rate. Efficient use of this unstructured data in the form of text, images, videos, audios etc., is crucial. Crowd surveillance is a typical use case of UAV enabled IoT that requires real time or near to real time big data analytics. The obvious use of artificial intelligence (AI) in such systems is to bring automation and intelligence for faster and efficient big data analytics. Another important use of AI is in the administration and governance of UAV enabled IoT system itself. The advanced AI techniques are important in implementing highly autonomous UAV operations. Few operations are path finding, flight schedules, navigation, authentication etc. AI can further assist in improving security of UAVs. Machine learning (ML) techniques can assure secured transmission of data between IoT devices and UAVs. This work presents a comprehensive survey of research for exploring applications of AI in UAV enabled IoT systems. It specifically focuses on the research in the field of convergence of three disruptive technologies namely AI, UAVs and IoT for improving the quality of life. This survey emphasizes the importance of AI in realizing autonomous and intelligent flying IoT.
