Summary:Pollen biology contributes to the productivity of a plant and thus a crop. Intensive research inputs have now been directed to this subject. A review has been undertaken on research advances in the various aspects of pollen biology, including pollen morphology, pollen load, pollination, pollen germination, pollen tube growth and seed production. Environmental factors greatly affect reproductive development, pollen biology and plant productivity. Sufficient pollen load, pollen quality, pollen viability and favourable environmental conditions are imperative for good plant productivity. In this regard, some guidelines have been put forward as precautions for attaining efficient reproductive development and final productivity.
