Summary:The synthesis of 4-(biphenylyl)-1-(2H)phthalazinone (I) is described. The action of hydroxylamine on o-xenoylbenzoic acid is investigated. Reaction of phthalazinone with acetic acid/acetic anhydride gave a mixture of 2 N-acetyl- and 1-acetoxy-4-biphenyl phthalazinone (III and IIIa'). Condensation of aromatic aldehydes with 2 N-acetylphthalazinone IIIa yielded 2N-cinnamoyl-1 (2H)phthalazin IV. The lactim form of phthalazinone was also investigated through the reaction with ethylchloroacetate. Structures of (V), (VI), (VII a and b) and (VIII) were established. The action of primary and secondary amines on ester (V) was also investigated. The interaction of the ester (V) with aromatic aldehydes under Stobbe condensation afforded the expected derivatives (IX a - h). Mannich reaction with 4-biphenyl-1-(2H)phthalazinone was also studied. Structures assignments for the new products were based upon elemental analysis and spectral data.
