Summary:Apparatus for withdrawing respective liquid samples from vials which are closed by closure caps includes a plurality of racks for accommodating the vials. A device including a housing is slideably carried on a gantry which in turn is slideably carried on guide tracks to provide two degrees of movement of the device for selective alignment of the device with the vials. An abutment member is driven vertically by a second gearwheel by a drive shaft through a first gearwheel and a dog clutch. A cannula which is secured within a first gear rack is driven vertically by the first gearwheel. On engagement of the abutment member with the closure cap of the selected vial, the clutch decouples the second gearwheel from the first gearwheel so that the cannula is urgeable through the closure cap into the vial.
