Summary:A media detection apparatus and method usable with an image forming apparatus includes a light source to irradiate light to surfaces of recording media, a light receiving part to receive light reflected from the recording media an angle changing unit to change an angle of at least one of the light source and the light receiving part with respect to the recording media, and a controller to determine a type of recording media through signals measured from the light receiving part depending on the angle changed by the angle changing unit. The media detection apparatus is capable of effectively detecting the type of recording media by changing an irradiation angle and reflection angle of light.
