Summary: | Non-asbestos elastomeric insulating materials for solid propellant rocket motors are disclosed. The insulating materials are composed of EPDM rubber, polyaramide fiber, liquid EPDM rubber, magnesium hydroxide or aluminum hydroxide, silicon dioxide, chlorinated flame retardant compound and zinc hydroxystannate. The char forming organic fiber is used to substitute asbestos in traditional insulating materials that are believed to cause serious environmental problems. These fillers in the formulation, which when combined, have a synergistic effect that reduces the ablation rate significantly. Also, use of zinc hydroxystannate to substitute Sb
