A method of producing a magnetic recording medium, comprising the steps of forming a metal thin film magnetic layer on a substrate, irradiating a light to a surface of the metal thin film magnetic layer, and measuring lightness of a reflected light from the surface to monitor coercive force of the metal thin film magnetic layer.
