Summary:Diabetes is a common disease in the older population that bears a high risk of further health problems. The number of old people suffering from diabetes will increase in the future. The treatment of diabetes requires competences in self management which are reduced by various impairments (e.g. in grasping, vision impairments, memory) and by depression and dementia. Diabetes teaching programs for old people make it possible to treat diabetes autonomously. There should be a routine of screening for dementia and depression so that diabetes treatment can be adapted or treatment of depression initiated. This monitoring improves quality of life, diabetes self care, and reduces mortality of old people.
