Summary: | The high incidence of physical and sexual abuse in the United States and in other parts of the world and the increased recognition of a history of these forms of victimization in the childhood of adults afflicted with a wide variety of psychiatric disorders make it imperative to document the harmful consequences maltreatment leaves on the child victims and to trace the process of traumatization as it extends into adulthood. The ultimate goal of this chapter is to develop a theoretical framework to help us understand the nature of the trauma associated with the physical and sexual abuse of children and its relationship to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). |
