Summary:The Piper Alpha oil rig disaster occurred about 9 months prior to the initial preparation of this chapter. It is, however, still a live and emotional issue for several reasons. First, the public inquiry has just begun and it is likely to continue for about 6 to 9 months or longer. Second, there is much uncertainty and disagreement about how best to dispose of the wreckage of the installation which now lies in over 140 meters of water. Third, there is much debate about the possibility of retrieving any more human remains from the site. Fourth, final judgments about litigation and compensation have yet to be reached.
