Summary:This chapter addresses the issues of the incidence, or prevalence, of NVLD in the specific learning-disabled (SLD) and/or clinic populations and known associated conditions. This knowledge can be very important to both policy makers and school personnel as they think about whom they serve and what services are needed. We are looking only at the incidence of NVLD in the SLD or clinic-based populations because those are the only estimates currently available. We will also address the issue of associated conditions in two ways. First, in this chapter we will look at common co-occurring disorders. This issue is typically referred to as comorbidities, and in the area of developmental and psychiatric disorders it is often considered more the rule than the exception. Here we are referring to other disorders such as depression, ADHD, the academic disorder, and semantic-pragmatic disorders that are often found co-occurring with NVLD. Second, in the following chapter we will review the available data attempting to look at the relationship between Asperger’s Disorder (AS) and NVLD as there remains considerable controversy regarding this issue.
