| Summary: | When my former Head of Department at Groote Schuur Hospital heard that I was to manage the Allergy Laboratory at Red Cross Hospital he looked at me thoughtfully and said: "You will be bored". I was undeterred however, and reported for duty to Dr Eugene Weinberg, who explained that it was essential to evaluate the patient's environment in terms of the aeroallergens in his/her surroundings. Each new patient was sent home with 2 potato agar dextrose settle plates, to expose in his/her home and then return to the laboratory, where fungal colonies would be identified. Patients were also given an envelope for harvesting mattress dust, which was examined for the presence of house dust mites. |
