Summary:The electric activity of the small intestine above and below an oblique myotomy was studied in the rabbit. In most cases, there was noted a definite increase in the amplitude of the electric recording above the functional obstruction showing increased peristalsis. This phenomenon seems to become attenuated with time, perhaps owing to the technical conditions of this study. Myotomy of the small intestine seems, in the light of these recordings, to be very efficacious. The authors compare it with other procedures which may be used to slow intestinal transit and suggest carrying out long or multiple myotomies, perhaps associated with one of the other techniques to increase the efficacy.
