Summary:The effect of sodium dichloroacetate on the size of myocardial infarction and on the changes of blood lactate and pyruvate levels after coronary artery occlusion were studies in 5 dogs. Sodium dichloroacetate administrated during coronary artery occlusion in dogs limited the size of myocardial necrotic area, simultaneous decrease of lactate and pyruvate levels in peripheral blood was observed. An analysis of lactate levels in blood samples from the coronary sinus and left atrium during coronary artery occlusion and the administration of sodium dichloroacetate suggests that the utilization of lactate by left ventricular myocardium under these conditions is increased.
