Summary:Sao Paulo - The Popular Socialist Party (PPS) has decided to back a request to impeach president Luis Inacio Lula da Silva, although the legislation does not allow political parties to call for the impeachment of a president, a right reserved for any citizen, who can enter with the petition in the Chamber of Deputies. The party announced that it plans to back an eventual impeachment request that will be presented by some popular entity of civil society, like the Brazilian Bar Association. In a note to the press, the party "calls for Brazilian society to mobilize around impeachment, a democratic and constitutional instrument to resolve crises and defend republican institutions, threatened today by indecent and criminal practices." The PPS justified its position based on the charges offered to the Federal Supreme Court (TSF) by attorney general Antonio Fernandoi Souza. Last week, Souza charged 40 persons with forming a criminal organization commanded by former minister Jose Direceu (presidents chief-of-staff) and by Workers Party (PT) lieutenants Jose Genoino, Delubio Soares and Silvio Pereira...
