Summary:The tax, which was first suggested by Borough Council members Jennifer Beck and John Curley, originally was opposed by James Barry of J.P. Barry Hospitality, which oversees the Molly Pitcher Inn and Oyster Point Hotel. He had said he would consider pulling the $50,000 funding he gives to the Red Bank Visitors' Center if the tax was implemented. Originally, Borough Chief Financial Officer Bruce Loversidge, who is retiring, had estimated that the tax could generate about $100,000 a year based on a 50 percent occupancy rate at the two hotels but cautioned that a definite number is difficult to predict.
