Summary: | Nov. 14--NAPLES, Fla. -- So, Pat Gillick. After weeks of speculation that the Phillies were hot to sign outfielder Alfonso Soriano, has an offer been made now that this year's free-agent class is officially up for bids? While Gillick allowed that the Phillies did officially present offers to a handful of free agents when the market opened for business Sunday -- and every indication is that one of them went to Soriano -- he is clearly determined to keep a lid on developments concerning his team's pursuit of pitching and a middle-of-the- lineup bat to protect Ryan Howard. The Phillies are also exploring options in case they are unable to re-sign lefthander Randy Wolf, who is a free agent. Item: Lefthander Fabio Castro, used out of the bullpen after being acquired from the Texas Rangers last season, is being used as a starter in the Dominican Winter League to see if he has the stamina to be considered in the Phillies' rotation. |
