Summary: | Democratic Rep. Dwight Evans, a Philadelphia mayoral candidate and apparent incoming chairman of the powerful House Appropriations Committee, put it this way: "[John Perzel] can try, but he's not going to win. The people have spoken." The Northeast Philadelphia Republican has a few options open in trying to maintain the speaker's job. He could try to flip a Democrat. He could try to persuade a Democrat -- or two -- to stay home on Jan. 2. Or he could try to get a Democrat to vote for him. Although Democrats say they do not want to underestimate Perzel, most do not believe he can pull it off, mainly because there is a strong Democrat in the governor's office: Ed Rendell. Perzel, they say, is not working from a position of strength. |
