Summary: | WALLACEBURG, ONT. - Liberal Leader Dalton McGuinty promised Wednesday to introduce the toughest environmental standards in North America if he is victorious in Ontario's Oct. 2 election, while Premier Ernie Eves put on hold plans to end the government monopoly over the province's electricity generating market. The Tory government has failed to protect Ontario's environment, McGuinty charged while visiting sites in the southwest of the province that have been hit by public health scares, including Walkerton, where seven people died from drinking polluted water. McGuinty later said that the Tory government had not accepted its responsibility to the people of Walkerton, where seven people died and 2,300 others fell ill after drinking polluted water three years ago. |
