Summary:That compares to the 67 percent statewide re-employment rate in 1997 and 1998, when the economy was much better, said Robert Bowles, the ESC economist behind the statewide study and the recent Gaston one. Bowles presented his findings to Gaston County Department of Social Services Director Keith Moon and others last week. Moon said that while he's glad to see that a majority of laid-off Gaston workers are finding new jobs, he's worried about how much they earn. The ESC study didn't capture workers who might have taken jobs in South Carolina or started their own businesses. But Brian Jackson, job placement supervisor with the WIA office, said only a few of the laid-off workers his office sees take jobs out of state or become entrepreneurs.
