Summary: | Jun. 18--Date line: May 2008. The new mayor and council have been in office less than six months. The '07 Democratic Primary was almost a clean sweep. Eight new council members and a new mayor took the oath of office in December. Of the nine members who voted in June to place the convention center hotel in the Coliseum's parking lot, only one remained. He didn't have opposition. Two others had decided not to seek re-election. There was another little glitch in the contract. Seems Marriott decided Macon's estimated increase in convention business couldn't support a four-star hotel, and considering the competition from Savannah, Augusta and Columbus' new 4-star Sheraton that's due to open in 2009, almost two years before a Fairfield will open in the parking lot in Macon, a smaller hotel was warranted, and there's nothing the city can do about it. |
