Summary: | The idea for the first book, the Hollywood guide, came to [Richard Alleman] at -- where else? -- the movies. Specifically, it occurred to him at Radio City Music Hall in 1983, at a showing of a restored version of "A Star is Born," starring Judy Garland and James Mason. One of Alleman's favorite Gotham spots is the apartment building at 171 E. 71st St. that provided the exterior location for the residence of the madcap Holly Golightly (Audrey Hepburn) in the 1961 romantic comedy "Breakfast at Tiffany's." Although Alleman always envisioned these books as practical guides for travelers, his lively style, sharp ear for gossip and fascinating historical asides have, over the years, made them irresistible to movie-loving armchair travelers. |
