Summary:Scientific-Atlanta (NYSE: SFA) today announced an agreement in principle to acquire the businesses of Nexus Engineering Corp. of Vancouver, British of Columbia. The acquisition will establish Scientific-Atlanta's presence in the international SMATV (Satellite Master Antenna Television) market as well as provide new distribution channels for Scientific-Atlanta's digital video compression products abroad. The terms of the transaction were not disclosed. In making the announcement at the Western Cable Show in Anaheim, California, Scientific-Atlanta CEO William E. Johnson said: "There are many plusses from this acquisition for Scientific-Atlanta. Nexus' reputation for quality and innovation is one of the highest in the industry. Their strong presence in key growth markets abroad, especially Southeast Asia, the Middle East, South America and Canada, compliments Scientific-Atlanta's global strategy in key product areas such as the international SMATV market and digital video compression. The international SMATV market is expected to grow rapidly as US programmers accelerate their moves abroad, especially in developing countries where much of the population is clustered in apartment complexes in urban and rural areas. This transaction also brings important volume and market synergies and a talented management team to Scientific-Atlanta. It will benefit our customers and shareholders." (excerpt)
