Summary:In the summer of 1864, when the outcome of the Civil War was still in doubt, Mr. Williams faked his age and name and enlisted in the United States Colored Troops at a recruiting station in Meadville, Pa. In 1887, Mr. Williams' "History of Negro Troops in the War of the Rebellion," was published, bringing to center stage the nearly 200,000 black men who, like himself, had fought to end slavery and defeat the Confederacy.
