Summary: | To be an emerging architect in Greece in 2022 is to have emerged from a decade of economic mid social crisis says Michaeljohn Raflopoulos of Architecture Research Athens (AREA). Founded by Raftopoulos, Stella Daouti and Giorgos Mitroulias in 2008, just before the global financial crisis struck in Greece, AREA were part of the generation of architects forced to navigate their own path through the harsh landscape of austerity. Their profession is neither well defined nor well protected, he continues, explaining that while it presents challenges, the lack of definition also provides opportunities to reinvent the role of the architect, the integrity of which is often met with scepticism from the public. Just as architectural anomalies contribute to Athens' 'Mediterranean liveliness', AREA's largely analogue process and dialogue-rich approach - in resistance to an increasingly digital and commercialized profession - engenders an equally lively output of models, speculative projects and realized buildings. |
