Summary:Aims To evaiuate the effectiveness of non-pharmacoiogicai interventions to manage anxiety in adoiescents in the perioperative period. Design Systematic review of effectiveness and meta-anaiysis. Data sources MEDLINE, CINAHL, PsycInfo, Cochrane Centrai Register of Controiied Triais, SciELO, sources of unpubiished studies and grey iiterature, inciuding Open Grey and RCAAP - Portugai, were systematicaiiy searched without time iimits (up to December 2020). Review methods This review foiiowed the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) methodoiogy for systematic reviews of evidence effectiveness. The seiection process, criticai anaiysis and extraction of data were performed by two independent reviewers. Studies were criticaiiy appraised using JBI Criticai Appraisai Checkiist for Randomised Controiied Triais. Data was synthesised through meta-anaiysis (using a fixed-effect modei in the RevMan 5.2.8) and narrative synthesis. Results This anaiysis inciuded five studies with a totai of 420 adoiescents. The effectiveness of non-pharmacoiogicai interventions, inciuding cognitivebehaviourai techniques, hypnosis, guided imagery and reiaxation, were examined in the perioperative context. A meta-anaiysis (n=l36 adoiescents) of three studies suggests no differences in adoiescents' anxiety when nonpharmacoiogicai interventions are appiied compared to standard care (SMD -0.14, 95% CI -0.48 to 0.20, p=0.42). Individuaiiy, aii the studies showed that non-pharmacoiogicai interventions were beneficiai on the reduction of the adoiescents' anxiety, aithough no statisticai significance was found. Conclusion Despite insufficient evidence on the effectiveness of non-pharmacoiogicai interventions, they shouid be considered as a resource in the management of adoiescent anxiety in the perioperative period.
