Summary:To demonstrate how tricky swimming pool water chemistry can be, consider the fact that often, people think the chlorine concentration is too high when they can smell a "chlorine-like" odor or the water is irritating to eyes, skin, etc. However, the reality is that contaminants like ammonia from sweat, urine or fertilizer react and bind to chlorine in pool water to create a new chemical, a chloramine. Chloramines cause that bad "chlorine-like" odor and are irritating.
