Summary:The jewel of Ancoats' historic fabric is Murrays' Mills, the world's oldest surviving steam-powered cotton mill--identified in 2014 as one of England's 10 most important buildings by Simon Thurley, then head of English Heritage. The development was initiated in 1798 by Scottish immigrant brothers Adam and George Murray, the inaugural building planned in anticipation of the Rochdale Canal and built by millwright Thomas Lowe, who had gained expertise working for Richard Arkwright during early experimentations with the factory system. Here, Duffy discusses discusses how Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios transformed mill into a new residential community.
