Summary:The next facility management challenge consists of questionable office environments, suspect productivity from better-educated employees, significant employee awareness of health and safety in the workplace, and employee morale problems obscured by fear of job loss. Facility managers must be able to design workstations and offices that allow employees to be as productive as possible. In addition, by being a part of the process, facility managers can meet with employees ahead of time to find out what their reasonable needs are in order to complete successfully their job functions. A well-designed facility can be an employee benefit in much the same way as medical and dental insurance. Facility managers must be committed to developing and maintaining safe, humane, functional work environments. As business changes, they must implement the corrective measures to address the complicated issues affecting employees properly.
