Summary: | The Czech Republic is without doubt the shining star among the countries in transition. Due to its political stability and its outstanding economic performance, foreign investment in the Czech Republic exceeded even that in Hungary. Foreign banks made an important contribution to the booming investment figures and, as a consequence, Prague is currently the city that hosts the largest number of Western financial institutions in the region. All in all, the Czech banking industry has made big steps on its way toward high efficiency over the past 4 years. The biggest group of banks active in the Czech Republic is composed of 25 banks with purely Czech capital, representing 67.3% of total subscribed bank capital volume. Their share in total bank assets is much higher, amounting to up to 74.9%. |
