Summary:The systolic hypertension in the elderly (SHEP) and MRFIT trials made it very clear that both systolic and diastolic levels are equally important in determining a patient's risk for cardiovascular events and in deciding on the need for drug treatment. Treating a patient with an elevated systolic level even when the diastolic is low is important for preventing stroke and managing heart failure in the elderly.
