Summary: | PACE of Philadelphia Inc. has used a combination of employee investment, organizational design, and training to organize a network of worker-owned and worker-controlled stores. Such a culture reinforces cooperative decision making directed at balancing the organization's needs with those within it. One of the program's goals is to give employees and managers influence and control of the business. This is achieved through education sessions providing workers with the necessary skills, information, and experience to be effective members of groups at all levels of the organization. PACE's worker education program uses approaches ranging from formal lectures to informal group work; it begins with information sessions designed to acquaint workers with the concept of worker-owned-and-operated stores and to provide financial and development information about the stores. Workers also are encouraged to work on committees that will affect the store's success. The formal education program takes place during and outside regular working hours and covers such topics as understanding the organization's legal structure, marketing, and how the company is financed. |
