Summary: | With all the economic doom and gloom on the news these days, a collective sigh of relief can be heard from many sporting goods retailers now that the fall has arrived. Football and soccer, two prime revenue drivers in the sporting goods business, have returned to complement retailers' coffers. Over the past two decades, football has surpassed baseball as "America's Game" and continues to grow at a very healthy rate. According to National Sporting Goods Association data, in 2007 there were more than 3.2 million frequent football participants between the ages of 7 and 17. Two other sports, volleyball and lacrosse, also offer significant fall sales opportunities for sporting goods retailers. |
