Summary:The objectives of the SQUAD FIRES LOE-1 were to: * Develop a valid POI, to include performance standards, to train 03XX NCOs as observers facilitating Type II terminal attack control. * Determine the feasibility of training an observer capable of facilitating Type II terminal attack control to the required standard using simulation. * Compare the adequacy of a low/medium-fidelity deployable simulation system to a high-fidelity permanent facility in training the observers to standard for facilitating a Type II terminal attack control. The following list highlights the leading core capabilities required of a squad leader: * He must understand that engaging targets with supporting arms, both surface and air, may provide a more favorable tactical option than engaging them with organic weapons. * He must demonstrate a basic understanding of current supporting arms assets, both surface- and air-delivered, and their respective employment considerations. * He must demonstrate an ability to locate a target to the greatest accuracy possible.7 * Upon target identification and location, he must be able to report accurately using contact, SPOT (unit situation report), and SALUTE (size, activity, location, unit, time, equipment) reports. * He and his fire team leaders must be able to correctly call for and direct artillery and mortar fires.\n Stage II (29 April to 10 May) was conducted at EWTGLant, Naval Amphibious Base, Little Creek, VA.
