Summary:This article focuses on data from the 1990 and 2000 decennial censuses. The information can be used to better understand some of the changes that have occurred in the children's population in the state. South Dakota experienced both increases and decreases in the 4 age groups that comprise the child population: under 5; 5 to 9; 10 to 14; and 15 to 17 years. The nation's population grew by 13.2%, while South Dakota's total population increased by 8.5%. The children's population in the nation grew by 13.7%, whereas the children's population in South Dakota grew by 2.1%. While the number of children in South Dakota grew by 2.1% between 1990 and 2000, the relative proportion of children in the population has remained stable.
