Summary:New retail concepts developed every decade have dramatically changed where, why and how we shop. There have been two new types of shopping centers developed each decade since the 1970s: 1. In the 1970s, the regional enclosed mall and specialty or theme center were developed. 2. In the 1980s, both the outlet center and power center were born. 3. The entertainment center and lifestyle centers were products of the 1990s. While there have not been any new types of shopping centers developed in the first decade of the 21st Century, a revitalization has occurred of two old and often neglected retailing areas - downtowns and neighborhoods. Retailers have also returned to urban neighborhoods with high densities, outstanding demographics and affluent populations with sophisticated tastes.
