Summary:VSAT networks now are accessible and cheaper for users due to the advent of shared hubs. There is a rapidly growing trend toward use of shared hubs in the US, Latin America, and Western Europe as an alternative to buying an entire hub that may be too large or too costly. Shared hub operators offer service, security, and cost savings. A major market is multinational companies doing business in developing countries that lack domestic telecommunications services. Alpha Lyracom Space Communications Inc. has seen an explosion in international VSAT opportunities, especially in Latin America. Time division multiple access (TDMA) and single channel per carrier (SCPC) services number 400 in Argentina and 3,000 in Brazil. TDMA sales recently went up in Venezuela and Colombia after deregulation. Mini-hubs are useful in Western Europe because of the countries' smaller geographic size. Demand trends in the world VSAT market are difficult to predict, though growth is expected to continue to escalate.
