Summary:The complexities of pharmacoeconomic research easily can become a trap. Without the proper insights and perspectives, coupled with sound administrative, fiscal and clinical balances, users and consumers of pharmacoeconomic information might find that more problems are created than solved. To avoid problems, managed care organizations should follow some guidelines for appropriate pharmaeconomic evaluations, analyses, interpretation and application, including: 1. Pharmacoeconomic information must be processed in conjunction with other qualitative factors such as clinical judgment and human experience to arrive at appropriate solutions to qualitative problems. 2. Numbers alone - research data results or price - are insufficient evidence when making new buying, prescribing or treatment protocol decision. 3. Making decisions based on information requires more than blind obedience to the facts.
