Summary:Lake finds out why the ability to detect, pick out and track enemy vehicular movements is a key element in achieving information superiority, especially when combined with the ability to relay tactical pictures to ground and air force commanders. Cost growth and technical difficulties led to the SOTAS and PAVE MOVER being combined into the Joint Surveillance and Target Attack Radar System (JSTARS) project, which also incorporated some of the technology developed for TACIT BLUE. Instead, there have been a number of attempts to keep JSTARS viable, including new processors and workstations (included in the Block 20), a glass cockpit, an MP-RTIP radar replacement (abandoned), an engine upgrade (not completed) and a postulated datalink upgrade (which remained unfunded).
