Summary: | Trade ministers from the United States, Mexico and Canada signed the long-debated North American Free Trade Agreement last month, the landmark pact that eventually will eliminate all trade and tariff barriers among the three nations. NAFTA would create the world's largest unified trading bloc of 360 million consumers, with a combined economy of $6 trillion. But the plan, which still must be ratified by the three nations' respective legislatures, has drawn heavy fire. Labor leaders insist that the pact will lead to a loss of U.S. jobs, and environmental groups fear that it could cause additional pollution along the Mexican border or lowered environmental enforcement within Mexico.
