Summary: | Richard Scudder obviously doesn't mind being a walking contradiction. He's been a leader in New Jersey's communications industry for decades, yet he assiduously avoids speaking to the press. In small groups, he's witty, comfortable and confident. Yet he shies away from public gatherings. The former owner and publisher of the now defunct Newark Evening News --considered in its time one of the finest dailies in America --Scudder has re-emerged as the chairman of one of the country's fastest growing newspaper chains, Media News Group Inc., which currently owns 23 dailies and 29 non-dailies throughout the country. Despite the fact that it was Scudder's money that launched the operation, it is his youthful partner, W. Dean Singleton, who does most of the talking for the aggressive, trend-setting company.
