Summary:Landscape architecture seems to be a profession that requires explanation. Surveyors measure and divide the land, architects design buildings, engineers specify stresses and loads -- but what do landscape architects do? The common perception is that landscape architects plant trees and bushes. This view is correct -- as far as it goes -- but it misses the forest for the shrubs. "It's more than little shrubs, it's not just 'frou-frou,'" explains Susanne Smith Meyer, a landscape architect from Concord. "There are so many things to be conscious of: environmental aspects like sun and prevailing winds, shade tree location, screening, how big a terrace should be and how it will relate to the house, picking the right variety of plants and sustainability."
