Summary: | Hinton profiles Sharon M. Draper, the Coretta Scott King Award winner for her book--'Copper Sun'. At age eleven, a helpful librarian arranged for Draper to receive a special library card that allowed her to check out books from the adult section. After high school, Draper, a National Merit Scholar, attended Pepperdine University. While there, she majored in English and read widely. She partially credits her enormous appetite for books with training her to become an author. The rest of the credit goes to Jared, a student who challenged Draper to submit a story to a writing contest sponsored by Ebony magazine. Never one to back down from a challenge, Draper wrote "One Small Torch," which became the 1990 Gertrude Johnson Williams Literary Contest winner and the opening chapter of her second novel, 'Forged by Fire'. |
