Summary:The efficacy of a sunscreen preparation against UV radiations depends on absorption spectrum (intensity and UV band width) of chemical filters, and also on the type of emulsion and vehicle properties. Research evaluating the transdermal penetration of 2 UV filters incorporated in 5 emulsions containing 8% of octyl methoxycinnamate (OMC) and 2% of butyl methoxy dibenzoylmethane (MDBM) is presented. After an 8 hour exposure, 40% to 80% of the recovered dose of both filters were determined in washes and horny layers of stratum corneum. The percutaneous absorption of OMC was low, but nevertheless higher than that of MDBM. However, these results should be related to the filter concentration in emulsions. Under the operating conditions of this research, the best envisageable sunscreen preparations are oily external phases that feature low penetration rates of UV filters and the highest substantivity to stratum corneum.
