Summary:This article postulates that the current fascination with issues of ethics in management is not merely the result of a defensive reaction to recent financial scandals, but rather signals a more fundamental desire for a more pluralist approach to business. In light of the reigning confusion between notions of rights, values, morals and ethics, we propose definitions to help clarify these notions. We also invite managers to carefully examine the basic assumptions influencing their perceptions and behaviour in carrying out their duties. After showing how 10 ethical traditions deal differently with the same problem, we propose two processes, or tools, for going beyond regulation and traditional values in management: the first process is based on dialogue with oneself and with others, while the second process is based on a study of the main traditions in moral philosophy.
