Summary:European national gas markets are on the brink of liberalization. By August, new European Union gas policies will take effect to facilitate competition, bring down energy prices and improve environmental conditions there. In essence, the European Union directive would require its members to open their transmission and distribution lines to third parties, which would allow consumers to choose from among a variety of suppliers. If the UK and the US are any indication, the process can get messy, but the end result will likely be positive.
