Summary:NSAIDs optimize surgical outcomes and improve postoperative experience for patients, which is especially important with patients who demand quicker and nearperfect visual results after multifocal IOL insertion and other refractive procedures that require a large out-of-pocket expense. In a study presented at the American Society of Cataract and Retractive Surgery annual meeting and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology annual meeting in 2006, Eric Donnenfeld, MD, and Kerry Solomon, MD, presented results of a study, "The effect of a topical NSAID on quality of vision with a multifocal IOL." The maintenance of pupil size, phacoemulsification time and energy, operative time, corneal clarity, postoperative inflammation, and intraoperative and postoperative discomlort was significantly improved with 3 days of NSAID prophylaxis versus 1 day prophylaxis, which, in turn, was significantly better than instilling the NSAm 1 hour in advance or placebo.
