Summary:Cancers that are known collectively as head and neck cancers, usually begin in the squamous cells that line the moist, mucosal surfaces inside the head and neck (for example, inside the mouth, the nose and the throat). [...]these squamous cell cancers (SCC) are often referred to as cancers of the head and neck and are further categorised by the area of the head or neck in which they begin. Oral SCC is most frequently diagnosed late in the course of the disease, because those affected fail to seek professional advice in the early stages of the disease, either because they do not understand the significance of early signs and symptoms, or because they are unaware of the health implications or in many cases both; about two-thirds of people with oral SCC already have large lesions at the time of diagnosis12.
