Summary:In 1938, in the middle of the Great Depression, this organization was founded by Richard Mertz, Publisher, and George Harding, Editor of Michigan Investor Magazine. This was a weekly publication and was the "house organ" of Michigan banking. Most of the original members were correspondent bankers from New York City, Chicago, and Detroit. In the early years, the initiation of new members was like a fraternity, rather wild. Late in the 1940's thru 1956 this changed to putting on a skit. But would you believe it was performed at the MBA Convention to all in attendance. The skit is now performed at a closed meeting of the Circus members near the end of the MBA Group Meetings. With several women now as members, the act has been cleaned up considerably.
