Summary:In this article, they will examine the tax audit/investigation situation in China and Hong Kong and critically discuss different investigative techniques that may be utilized by both Chinese and Hong Kong tax authorities to assist in detecting tax fraud as well as tax risk management by taxpayers, particularly those corporate taxpayers when facing with the increasing stringent tax audit/investigation environment in China and Hong Kong. With advances in information systems and technology, there has been a converging trend in tax audit/investigation techniques in the global arena. It is hoped that this article could help those policy makers and corporate management of multinational firms involved in corporate governance, e.g., board of directors and audit committees, as well as professionals, e.g., attorneys, and tax investigators and practitioners who provide legal and tax services to multinational firms in China and Hong Kong, understanding the opportunities and threats in the area of tax audit/investigation, especially in China and Hong Kong.
